Hello: My maternal grandfather, Joseph Bridges was born on January 21, 1880. I know that he had two sisters, younger than him I believe. When his Mother died, I think Joseph was around 8 years old. His Father could not manage the children alone. So his Grandmother took Joseph, and some aunts took the two girls. However, when Joseph was around 10 years old, his Grandmother died, and this is when he went to the Bernardo Orphanage. From there, he was sent to Canada where he lived at a doctor's home somewhere in Ontario. My maternal Grandmother Margaret Mottram, was born in England July 28, 1894. She was the youngest of 6 children. I know that her parents both died when she was about 6 years old. However, all the children stayed together. I believe their home was in Manchester on Gordon Street. Some of those children were Alice, Herbie, Louise to name a few. My Grandmother and her sister Louise came to Canada for a visit. This is where my two grandparents met each other. My grandmother returned to England, and Joseph followed her back shortly thereafter. I know that they were married in England - try March 30, 1918 or 1919. They returned to Canada to make a new beginning for themselves. My Mother, Margaret Evelyn Bridges was born on April 25, 1920. While my grandparents always stayed in touched with the Mottram family, sadly, there was no contact between my Grandfather and either of his sisters.
My husband and I are planning a trip to England this coming June (he was born in England, funnily enough) and I would very much like to look up any relatives from my Grandfather's side of the family. I do not know what his sisters names were, but I would hope that they too married, had children, who in turn had children. Would you be able to find out if there are any relatives on my Grandfather's side of the family who are still alive?
I sincerely hope that this summarized history of my maternal Grandfather may help you to locate some of his blood relatives.
Waiting to hear back from you, Sheila L. Shergold
