I am researching a botanical artist from Brixton. Her name
is Nelly Roberts. The 181 census lists her age as 8 and her
address as 72 Loughborough Road. She was hired by the Royal
Horticulutral Society in 1897 for a trial period of 6 months
to paint orchids awarded by the RHS. She retired 56 years
later in 1953 after painting more than 4,500 flowers. She
died on Easter Sunday, 1959. I would appreciate any information
anyone might have about her. I am especially trying to find
her date of birth, her given name at birth, if she had any
formal art training and whether she painted in her home.
