My name is Doreen Moran. My mother Ellen Steel nee Gillespie born 26th July, 1910 (registered birth Houghton), died 26th February 1986, aged 75 (St Catherines Index Vol. 3, Page 2862) was married to Ernest Steel born (registered birth Hartlepool) 17th December, 1905, died January 1990 aged 84 (St Catherines Index Co. Cleveland, Vol. 3, Page 2379). Mam and Dad married 1956, (St Catherines Index - Volume 1a Page 1904 March quarter registered marriage Durham SE District), I was 5 years old then. They both lived in Stockton-on-Tees, Cleveland (Teesside) North East England.
Mam was married to a Charles Henry (got called Harry) Hutchinson, around 1920's. Charles' occupation was a Furniture Dealers Assistant, Co-operative Store, Bishopton Lane, Stockton-on-Tees. They lived in 55 Alliance Street, Stockton. His mother was Welsh. They had two daughters and one son, Terence (Terry now in Australia) whom she had when she was about 21, he is 70 or 71 in December 2000, born circa 1930. Joyce Agnes Hutchinson, born January 1939, 43 Hind Street, Stockton-on-Tees, (St Catherines Index - Vol. 10a Page 118, registered Durham SE) died March, 2000 and Eileen Hutchinson born 17th February, 1937, she was 15 when Nana died, Eileen was 63 gone February 2000, I was 1 years old then. Nana ((Jane (or Ginny or Jinny) Gillespie)) lived in 73 Alliance Street, at that time. Apparently Charles (Harry) went off with mam's best friend Florence (Flo) Moran and mam went off with my dad Ernest Steel.
My grandparents were Francis Gillespie born 1872/73 and Jane Gillespie nee Henderson born 17th January, 1876, died 1952 aged 76 (St Catherines Index Vol. 1a Page 433 September Quarter, Durham SE District) in Newtown Avenue, Stockton at Aunt Nora's house (my mam's sister). My grandmother Jane & grandfather Francis were married in 1901 at St Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Sunderland, and he had his address down on the marriage cert as 37 Rose Street, Sunderland. Grandmother (Jane) had sisters and brothers Alice (Ali) died about 90 (oldest) do not think she ever got married. Emma died about 73 years, George and Thomas. Grandad (Francis) was about 6'4" very smart apparently died around 1940, his granddaughter Eileen was about 3 years old when he died of throat cancer, in his 60's. He was in the Royal Horse Guards and rode directly behind the Queen's Royal Carriage. Had to be bought out. Don't know when this was but he was 40 by the 1914-18 war. He worked in the shipyards as a Caulker. Lost his eye in an accident. Use to travel around the various shipyards and left my grandmother Jane who then had to gather up her children and move to Stockton area. She got no help from her sister Alice who had a grocer's shop. My grandfather's brother I think was James was married to Nellie. Also lived in Alliance Street.
My grandparents had three daughters and two sons, Nora, (eldest) died around 1988, Kathleen (Kitty), William (Billy) lived in Halifax, he was director or something like that of the Rowntrees factory in England and lived in Ireland, now dead, had two daughters, Kathleen (Kay) now Kathleen Balme living in Leicester and Maureen who I think now lives in France. His wife was Winnie. Vera born Kayll Road, Sunderland, above a chemist's shop? around 1899, nearest Catholic Church, St Joseph's in Deptford, Ellen and Frank Gillespie who I think was born Stockton and was in the Army I think he served in Normandy as a foot soldier.
My greatgrandparents Honora nee Clarke (her father was William Clarke an agricultural labourer), and Francis Gillespie came over from County Mayo, Ireland, I think because of the potato famine or after. He was a labourer. They were married in July 1863 but not sure whether married before coming over to England. On the 1861 census they were living West Hartlepool, Francis my great grandfather was 35 and a boilersmith, Honora my greatgrandmother was 30. Children of theirs then was Mary 6 born Sunderland, William 5 Sunderland, Michael 3 Sunderland, a Francis 1 died aged 2 born Monkwearmouth, Barbara 1 month born West Hartlepool and Ann mother of Francis my greatgreatgrandmother aged 60 wife's assistant born Ireland. On the 1881 census their dwelling place was 79 Lower East Street, Middlesbrough, Francis was 47, occupation Ship Caulker (Builder), I think he lost an eye in an accident, I don't know whether it was on the ships and he got compensation, Honora Gillespie was 40, siblings (daughters and sons) Mary A Gillespie 16 (registered birth Sunderland) occupation General Servant, William Gillespie 15 (registered birth Sunderland), Scholar (school child), Francis (grandfather) was 8 (registered birth Hartlepool), Eleanor Gillespie was 6 (registered birth Sunderland), Joseph Gillespie was 4 (registered birth Sunderland), Michael Gillespie was 2 (registered birth Middlesbrough), a Margaret and James Gillespie was 5 months (registered birth Middlesbrough) married somebody called Nellie. Ann, my greatgreatgrandmother died in 1879 at the Middlesbrough address. My great greatgrandparents on the Gillespie side were Patrick and Ann, I think he died around 1879 before his wife came over to England. Honora's father was called William Clarke.
My grandmother's (Jane's) parents were my greatgrandparents, Robert Henderson born 1849 and Alice Henderson born 30/3/1855 nee Duell (Ann Mustard who was Alice's sister, married a Robert Mustard)they married in September 1872. She was 18 years old and a barmaid and lived in 47 George Street, Sunderland. In the 1881 census he was a grocer aged 30 and she was 26 and their children then were Alice 7, Emma 2, and George 4 months. George Street may now be called Cork Street, it was off High Street West, between Sans Street and Drury Lane. Robert's father was called George.
61 Moor Street, Sunderland comes in somewhere. Don't know whether this is on the Henderson or Duell side.
My grandmother's grandmother was Jane Duell nee Slater born 18/12/1827, her father was Robert Slater, a blacksmith, married a Joseph Duell, born 1830, a seaman and his father was Henry Duell a farmer. My grandmother Jane Gillespie nee Henderson turned up on the 1881 census with her grandmother, Jane Duell (a nurse) her grandmother staying at a pub in Walworth Street, Sunderland, down on the census as a niece of Robert & Ann Mustard. Funny enough in the Northumberland & Durham magazine there was an article about a Robert Mustard lost at sea who left a message in a bottle to his wife and children. He lived at 25 Lawrence Street, Sunderland. Jane Henderson (my grandmother) lived at 15 Lawrence Street when she married my grandfather Francis Gillespie.
