Looking for ancestors to Peter A Brown who emigrated to the US about 1850. His name was Cluff, McCluff or Clough when he lived in Leeds, and he changed it shortly before or after leaving England. I am also looking for an historical event in Leeds about that time that might give us his first name. Old family stories suggest that he left his job at the Bank of Leeds with part of the banks assets. Can anyone confirm the story or help with his name or other information. He lists on one US census that his father was from Scotland. Any ideas on how to check the story or information would be helpful.
