I am trying to trace the birthplace of my great-grandfather David Stark Durie and also the name of his mother and any brothers or sisters. Durie emigrated to New Zealand in 1840 having previously fought in the Spanish Carlist wars.
David Durie was born 10 June 1804 to Charles Durie and wife unknown. Charles at one time was the British consul at Christiana and is said to have been Laird of Craigluscar, the Durie's ancestral home although he doesn't seem to be among those listed who have held that title. Charles was born 6/1/1777 and was known to be living in Torquay in December 1861.
In 1843 David married Penelope Walker - just two days after she arrived from England - so it must have been a pre-arranged marriage - possibly suggesting that the Walker family were close friends - His wife's mother's name being Katherine Stark - he was christened David Stark Durie and his first born daughter was named Katherine.
Any info at all much appreciated.
