Robert Ireland. Born in Scotland, 1854/55. He was a Boy-Piper in a Scottish Regiment (possibly 21st (Royal Scots Fusiliers) when he deserted at Ayr about 1875. Came to the US and settled in New York City; became a citizen; worked for NYC Post Office; married and raised a family. Home address was East 145 St. Harlem where he lived with his wife Mary and four children. Apparently there was a bounty on him as a deserter and someone local knew it. He was coaxed to upstate New York on the pretex of a piping job. Then lured over the Canadian border and nailed by authorities. My last knowledge of him was on board a ship at Halifax when he wrote his wife (3/23/1885) explaining his misfortune. Would very much appreciate hearing from anyone having any knowledge of Robert Ireland either before or after his return to Scotland. Thank you.
