I am searching for information concerning my great great grandfather Charles Thomas b.1819, who together with his sisters Mary Anne b.1823, and Sarah b.1825, emigated to Melourne in 1840. There they joined their brother David b.1813,a doctor and later an eminent surgeon and one of the founders of the Melbourne Hospital, who had arrived in 1839. Charles Thomas left some rather colouful reminiscences of his life in Wales and Australia. They were the children of William Thomas d.1833, and his wife Ann David(s) d.1825, who were married in Llandeilo Fawr in 1810. According to Charles' memoirs, his father owned an estate called LLwy-y-Berllan at Llgadog and the details we have to date would tend to bear this out. Both parents are apparently buried at Llandeilo as is the only brother to remain in the UK, Henry Thomas (Collector of Customs Gloucester) who according to CT was married to Kate Buckley of Kilvig House,Llanelly. He also refers to his mother's mother having married a second time a barrister called Lewis, their only son David Lewis in turn married Jane Morris the daughter of the Vicar of Llanelly. The reminisences touch on a number of related families; Edwards(father's mother),Dr Jno Davids Isle of Wight(mother's brother),Rev'd Davids, Dean of Carnarvon (mother's uncle), a Dr Prothero,Buckley and Morris both of Llanelly. One would imagine with such a wealth of information that research would be simple! But not so. A cousin in New Zealand has done some work but we still are no nearer finding out much about our ancestors and collaterals. So, any help or suggestions would be received with much gratitude! I would be happy to supply a copy of the reminisences if they would be of interest.
