I have an ancestor JOHN GAGE (alias AMES) who was in the 9th foot and went on to become an Honary Captain in the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. He married Johanna O'Brien in 1868 in London but following that marriage none of their children have shown up in English records - there were at least 3 according to early records at the PRO. I have been wondering, therefore, whether he did at some stage go to Ireland. Further, one daughter MARY JANE GAGE (only one known by name) became MARY JANE BUTLER which surname I believe is Irish, marriage not found in English records.
John Gage had retired by the late 1890's. I was wondering, therefore whether any records exist for this regiment which might answer a lot of questions.
