Hi-- I'm looking for any information on birthplace and parents of William Owen, born about 1782-3 in a place he called 'Karny' in Montgomeryshire. I think this was probably Carno, but so far have found no suitable baptism for him.
He joined the Montgomeryshire Militia about 1802 in Welshpool and later voluntered as a soldier in the Royal Artillery in April 1805 at Plymouth. In 1807 he married Mary Thomas in Burslem, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire, while his Company were up there on recruitment duties-- and both went out to Nova Scotia with the RA in 1811. They had children:- Mary born 1808, Burslem Staffs, John 1813 Nova Scotia (my gt gt grandfather), Elizabeth 1816 Nova Scotia, Anne 1819 Nova Scotia, Jane 1821 Nova Scotia and Margaret 1824 Nova Scotia. William was discharged from the Army in 1826 and gave 'Karny' as his birthplace on his Army papers. The family returned to England and settled in his wife's home town, Burslem. Two more sons were born:- William 1828 Burslem, and Edward 1831 Burslem.
William was an Ag Lab on the 1841 Census for Burslem but died in 1847 aged 65, and therefore never made it onto the 1851 census which might have shown his birthplace.
If anyone recognises William, I should love to hear from you. With thanks. Deborah.
