Hello--I'm looking for any information on WILLIAM OWEN, born about 1782--4 in a place he called 'Karny' in Montgomeryshire-- as described on his Army discharge papers. I think this is probably Carno but I've not found any suitable baptism for him.
He joined the Montgomeryshire Militia in 1802 in Welshpool and later volunteered for the Royal Artillery, 6th Battalion, in April 1805 at Plymouth. In 1807 he married Mary Thomas at Burslem, Stoke on Trent, where his company was recruiting. Their first child Mary was born in Burslem in 1808, and in 1811 he was posted to Nova Scotia, accompanied by his family. Further children were born in Nova Scotia-- John 1813 Sackville, Elizabeth 1816 Annapolis, Anne 1819 Annapolis, Jane 1821 Halifax and Margaret 1824 Halifax. The 6th Battalion returned to England in 1825 and William was discharged from the Army in 1826. He went with his family to his wife's birthplace at Burslem and two more sons were born-- William 1828 and Edward 1831.
William from 'Karny' made it onto the 1841 census described as a labourer, but died in 1847 of Dysentery.
If anyone recognises William, I should love to hear from you-- with thanks-- Deborah.
