He was a merchant and sea captain during the Napoleonic wars. He and his young family emigrated to the United States in 1804 and settled in Lewiston, New York, USA.
He had the following children born in Dundee, Scotland.:

In New York State, USA, were born:

In Lewiston, New York was born:

While Alexander Millar, his wife Janet and son Alexander stayed on and continued to reside in Lewiston, New,York, the rest of the family moved to and founded the town of New Dundee, Wilmot Township, Waterloo County in Ontario, Canada, about in 1824. They built a grist mill and a store.
