Hi to you all!
I live in Dunedin, New Zealand. I am 36 years old and I am trying to research my great grandfather, Alexander McLellan. His DOB is thought to be 1849. As to his place of birth, that is a wee bit of a mystery! One family story is that he was from Oban or Ayr. Having gained a copy of my grandfather's birth certificate it showed under "place of origin of father" as Argyllshire. So, one can only assume that Oban would be where he came from (?). His NZ wedding certificate shows his parents to be Charles and Flora (nee McPhail) and were said to be farm labourers. The family story says that he left home at the age of 10 to join the Royal Navy as a cabin boy on the then Royal Yacht. He apparently left home because his father cruel to him. Here is where it gets complicated...the father mentioned here is suppose to be a stepfather. Why is mother remarried is not known and if in fact "McLellan" is the name of his natural father or stepfather?

The family story also has him being a cousin (????) to Sir Colin Campbell, later Lord Clyde. (of the 93rd Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders) Just how accurate this is is really up in the air!

Alexander later returned home only to find his mother had died.

He came to NZ initially in 1882 on board the Shaw Savill and Albion Line ship Dunedin and was the engineer aboard her when she sailed with the first cargo of frozen lamb/mutton from NZ to London. He married in Oamaru, NZ in 1892.

If you should have anything close to any of the above I would be eternally grateful!

Sincerely yours

Andrew
