I am searching for more information on David Simpson (my g.grandfather). 1. Reported age 65, born in Scotland on 1871 Quebec census. 2. Owned a farm in Noyan, Quebec with his father John Simpson.
An old (1850) letter identifies Innes as a brother. Innes was christened 6/Dec/1794 in St Cuthbert's, Edinburgh, the parents being John and Sophia Duff. Another brother James settled in Montreal. The 4th brother Joseph returned from Canada in 1847 to persue business interests in Kildare, Ireland. The brothers had somehow been employed in a timber planting project at Moore Abbey in the 1820's. Joseph bought & planned to harvest
100 acres of these trees.
In an 1847 letter, Joseph wrote of having been through Scotland and visiting Uncle David. ("The most extraordinary man I have ever met"). David had a son David. I do not know if this Simpson or Duff related.
Other family from my father's side were Ferguson, Struthers, and Hogg. My roots seem to be in the Edinburgh area.
I would appreciate an answer even if it is not evident that the ancesters are related. I know so little about Edinburgh. Also, I would be happy to look up information on other people of these sir names who emmigrated to the Montreal-Missisquoi Bay, Quebec area.
Also, since David did not marry in Canada until he was almost 50, I suspect there may have been an earlier marriage in Scotland. Perhaps there were even children from this marriage who came with the family when they immigrated to Canada around 1840.
