I am trying desperately to find a link to my Irish heritage. My great grandfather was William David Mayes, b. 12 May 1846 in Lanacaster,MO(not certain, it may have been PA),whose father was born in Ireland, his mother in Indiana / Virginia. The only William David Mayes found on the genealogy websites, Family Search.org and Rootsweb.com)state William David Mayes was married to Henrietta Warner Shaw. Looking back through the Shaw lines, it leads to Ireland and or Scotland. On my great grandfather's death certificate dated Feb.27,191 8 in Rosedale,Bolivar County MS as place of death with Rosedale, also, given as place of burial on Feb.29,1918.He was 71 years old.According to his son's Bible, the age corresponds, He would have been 72 on May 12 after he died in Feb.On the death certificate, the word unknown as birthplace had been scratched through and Scotland written above. My grandfather, John Hugh Mayes,Sr. signed the certificate. In the family Bible, it also lists my grandfather's birth name was John Hugh Wesley Mayes b. Feb. 15,1885 in Slidell, St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana but all we ever knew was John Hugh Mayes. He married Olly (Ollie) Barrett abt.1904 in MS.He became Sr. after the birth of my dad, John Hugh Mayes,Jr. on Feb.2,1910 in Hollandale, Washington County,MS.If anyone would be so kind to share any shred of data regarding this family,it wwould be deeply appreciated. Our family branch of the Mayes tree is almost gone since there are only four grandchildren left with no male descendants to carry on the Mayes name. Thank you so very much, Gay M. Hall
