attention south african surfers!!
i am seeking contact with any relatives or anyone who knew of a wartime comrade of mine, sgt barry,a white south african,ex merchant navy 1st mate serving in the raf as a navigator on 38 torpedo bomber squadron based shallufa egypt in 1942.we trained together in england in the crew of pilot officer pat nanton of antigua, myself being front gunner and we flew to egypt august 1942,where i was assigned to another crew.on 4th nov 1942 the crew failed to return from a torpedo attack on enemy shipping in the agean sea.p/o nanton and the rest of the crew are listed, with the exception of sgt barry,on the column for those with no known grave in the el alemain war cemetery, egypt.therefore assume sgt barry survived
the incident, probably as a prisoner of war.i am in contact with the nephew of p/o nanton and we would be grateful for any information that would throw light on the fate of these brave men.
thank you ,nobby clarke
