We have just found out that my husband's gt. grandma (Ann Brewer) was living with a man called James Drainey on the 1851 Census.

He was saying unmarried and so was she except that she had four children and they were called Brewer..we do not know whether or not this name was her maiden name or whether, in fact, she was lying and there had been a Mr. Brewer somewhere along the line.

If not then the children must have been James Drainey's. He apparently was born at sea, British Subject on way from Egypt............

His age various........on the following 1861 and 1871 Census' but we reckon he was born around 1800.

Is this name Drainey (various spellings I think..........) an Irish name?

What on earth was his mother doing at sea very pregnant and on the way from Egypt? Any ideas, please.

When I found him on 1851 Census he was in Barnsley with Ann Brewer. They were apparently married in 1853 (no cert. yet but sure its them) and then they had two more girls. Ann survived him, well she was about 15 years his junior.......

Cheers, Jean Edwards
