I'm trying to find my maternal family.Whilst I can find some in the 1881 census, I can't find my great grandfather nor his father & mother.

Great Grandfather: William Arthur Strachan. Born 18 June 1850, St Pancras,London
Died: 15 April 1929 at Lambeth, aged 78. Was a Captain in The East Kent Regiment, and after service, became a tea procurer/grocery agent. Met, but not married my gt grandmother Mary Woodland, [known as Florence Mary Strachan] and they had 8 plus children together.
His father was William Strachan [ born circa 1818 in london. He married Sarah Williams [I suppose they were married], born circa 1831 in Chepstow, Mon. They had 10 kids. In the 1881 census, the family [minus most of the kids] were living in 23 Bouverie Road, London. Most of those who were working [William Snr, Louisa M, Archibald John] were telegraph clerks. One son Edwin James was an out of work telegraph clerk, and the household had one domestic servant - Ann Goddard, aged 16.
I am making the assumption that William Arthur does not appear in the available censuses because he was in the army at the time, but I can't find his father in the 1871 census either. Can anyone help?
