RILEY/BURDETT/TREW/FLEET
Researching my maternal grandfather’s family.
Frank Burdett RILEY (b 8.8.1880 Wood Green, Essex)) was the second child to John RILEY (b 20.12.1857 Dagenham, Essex) and Sarah Elizabeth BURDETT (b 29.3.1855 South Lambeth) who were married at St Anne Limehouse, Mdx on 4.2.1878.
His father was William RILEY, Bootmaker (mother Eliza TREW); her father was Samuel BURDETT, Night Light Manufacturer (mother Sarah FLEET).
John and Sarah also had:
Alice Florence (Flo) b 9.1.1879 married Ted CHILDS – no known issue
Percival Frederick Fleet b 30.12.1881 married Annie; 2 children: Phillip married Rhoda; Edna married Bernard COLLINS (2 children, girl, and boy Peter)
Mabel Isabella Burdett b 30.12.1881
Mary Lillian May b 18.2.1884 married Walter ROBBINS; 3 children: Clement; Mary married Eric FRITH (4 children: Janet, Clara, Nigel, Danielle), Hilda married Don MacMILLAN (1 known child Andrew)
Daisy b 18.1.1888 never married
Ernest Edward b 20.4.1892 married May; 1 known child Maisie (1 known child Sheila)
Elliott John b 15.6.1896 married Marjorie; 2 children: Peter and Kathleen.
I am in touch with both Peter and Kathleen, and they have given me all they know.
I have found a William RILEY, shoemaker, aged 71, in the 1881 census living with his son William, ostler, aged 31, at Chadwell Heath, Essex, and a possible birth at Romford in 1809.
Sarah BURDETT was born Kennington, Surrey; there is also a Samuel born to the same named parents at Kennington in 1854.
According to family lore Samuel BURDETT’s factory went up in flames and he lost everything. He in not in the 1881 census, and is known to have sailed for America to make his fortune. However, he was never heard from again.
Any help appreciated.
