Trying to find some Aberdeen McDonalds/MacDonalds... My Gt-gt-grandfather was Alexander McDonald/MacDonald, a baker, born about 1855 in Aberdeen. His father was George, a joiner. Alexander married Mary McGregor in 1877 in Brockley Hill, Kent (later became London), went back to Aberdeen with her, where they had 2 children, Alexander Leslie and Elizabeth, then back to London where they had at least 5 more children. The family is shown as MacDonald in the 1881 census, but McDonald in the 1891 & 1901. On Alexander's wedding cert, he is shown as M'Donald and Mary is M'Gregor. We have found a couple of possible Alexanders in Aberdeen, but as we know nothing about George (or his wife, Alexander's mother) it's a bit difficult to know where to start. The later generations gave the first-born son the name Alexander, which tempts me to think that Alexander was possibly not the eldest son of George, i.e. I suspect that he had an older brother George. But that's just me hoping that they were consistent with their naming habits back then! Any help gratefully received. Thanks from Germany, Karen
