Hi,
I'm looking for my GGrandfather, HARRY HENDERSON born 1863/4, and ANDREW HENDERSON, born 1874-ish. Family story is that Harry was born in Aberdeen, had 7/8 other brothers, all fishermen. He was said to have walked to Birmingham for work, ending up as a steel roller. I found an 18year old man in Birmingham,1881 census, who's the right age & job, living as the son of William Henderson, and he is my grandfather's father (birth certs & grandad's siblings all present in 1891/1901 censuses). Problem is, he's nowhere in England/Wales in 1871 & can't find him in Scottish census either. There is a Harry right age in Scotland 1871, but he married & stayed there.

Another family story is a Henderson who joined the Navy (?Royal, ? merchant) & ran a ship's chandler's in Yokohama, dying there before WW1. This is Andrew, died June 1907, Yokohama, aged 33, clerk, - death cert gives no other info.

The Andrew story turned out to be true, so is the Harry story true too? The only scenario that works is this - Harry is related to William by blood, but not his son (?nephew), Harry does come from Scotland, and he & Andrew are brothers.
This explains Harry's sudden appearance aged 18, his absence from 1871 census, and how a Birmingham family knew correct details of a death thousands of miles away - only a family death would be known. Problem is - no evidence for any of this.

If any of this sounds familiar, or if you have any idea where I can go next I'd love to hear from you.

Thanks,
Ellie
