I am searching for information on both branches of my family - father's and mother's sides. The furthest back we have reached on my father's side is William Birkett, born in Out Rawcliffe, near Garstang, Lancashire, in 1853 and later moved to Haydock, St. Helens, some time before the census of 1881.
On my mother's side, Michael Cogan (Cugeran) was born in Bockagh, Ballaghaderrin, Co. Roscommon, Eire, on January 11th. 1881, the son of Thomas Cugeran, a small farmer, and Honoria Cugeran (formerly Frain) who had to make her mark on the wedding certificate as she couldn't sign her own name.
He left Ireland when he was 13 in search of work and by the time he was married, on October 21st. 1911, Michael's surname had changed to Cogan.
He was living at 480, Fleet Lane, Parr, St. Helens, Lancashire, when he married Mary Lee, daughter of Richard Lee, of 77, Station Road, Haydock, St. Helens, at English Martyrs Church, Haydock.
